Seal Stranding on Duxbury Beach :(

July 27, 2009 - 10am

Young seal stranded on Duxbury Beach just over the boardwalk by the lifegaurd chair.  Cones were set up around the animal to keep curious beach goers from adding to its stress.  The Boston Aquarium was called in to rescue the animal, however it passed away before their arrival.  It was suspected that the animal was suffering from sickness or disease, as there were no visible wounds and the pup appeared to be severly underweight.  The aquarium will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Easy ways to keep sea creatures healthy-

Practice responsible boating- stay free of rocky shores where seals are basking.

Dispose of trash properly.  Cut 6-packs rings and recycle plastic bags.  Do not release balloons into the air- they often end up in the water… and bellies of our underwater friends!

*If you do find a stranded animal- do not touch it.  Many creatures like seals appear cuddly, but actually BITE!  They also carry lots of bacteria and possibly disease.  Call the nearest animal rescue team!

Don’t miss the First Annual Ecology Drawing/Writing/Photo Contest!

Summer 2009 theme: “When I think of Duxbury Bay, I think of…”

Submit your artwork by Friday, August 14 to the DBMS office.

All participations will recieve recognition for their work- winners will receive prizes and have their work displayed in the new ecology classroom.  Official entry forms are included in students’ take home packets from BFLF classes and are available in the main office!

First Wave Marine Ecology students may also participate in this contest!

Lobster Lovers!!

Last week the Big Fish, Little Fish ecology class kicked off with Love a Lobster. Students ages 3 to 6 went for a boat ride and pulled up DBMS’s lobster trap. All groups caught a lobster- though deciding upon a name was difficult. We had Lobby, Issabel, Crabby, Larry Jr. II, and Ivan. Check back soon for pictures of this lovable creature!
